SAF and IES Abroad Announce Strategic Affiliation

SAF is pleased to announce its affiliation with IES Abroad, a U.S.-based leader in the study abroad visiting student field. This strategic decision serves both organizations’ students and member universities, and will considerably strengthen SAF’s development.

IES Abroad is the preeminent partner to academic institutions globally in offering students exceptional study abroad and internship opportunities. Founded in 1950 and headquartered in Chicago, IES Abroad educates students to become leaders through worldwide study abroad opportunities that meet the highest standards of academic quality. During its 65-year history, IES Abroad has provided more than 110,000 students with outstanding academic and cultural experiences as a study abroad leader, and today offers more than 126 programs annually to American students in 34 locations around the world. IES Abroad has consistently set new standards in academic excellence, including the development of initiatives such as the IES Abroad Model Assessment Practices (MAPs) that have become standard-bearers for the entire field.

SAF’s affiliation with IES Abroad is the next step in our mission to create more opportunity for SAF International University Network members to provide their students with the understanding and intercultural skills necessary to succeed in and contribute to their own societies as well as to the world. SAF’s operations will continue under our highly respected brand, but with a renewed sense of optimism as the Foundation looks to work with member universities to identify new needs and opportunities to meet them.

SAF Launches Research Study Abroad with Johns Hopkins University

The Study Abroad Foundation is pleased to introduce the Johns Hopkins University Summer Biology Research Program, where experienced biology majors embark on an 8-week journey of discovery under the tutelage of Dr. Joel Schildbach, professor of biology and vice dean for undergraduate education at the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. In a laboratory at the world’s preeminent research institution, qualified participants will isolate and characterize novel bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) from the environment using modern molecular biological techniques. Applicants should contact SAF for details.

SAF Begins Working with Universities in Central Asia

SAF has begun working with select universities in Central Asia, and Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan is the first university in the region to formally join the SAF International University Network. With large land masses, relatively small populations and developing higher education systems, working in Central Asia will be a different type of challenge for SAF which until now has largely worked with universities in the well–developed higher education systems of East Asia and with a group of China's elite 985 and 211 universities. Beginning in Kazakhstan SAF will work with a small group of universities that have credible plans to internationalize and increase international student mobility. From this base we shall begin to work with Kazakhstan's more traditional universities as well as a small number of universities elsewhere in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Initially we shall serve our member universities in Kazakhstan from our office in Seoul, Korea, but as soon as is practicable we shall do as we have done elsewhere and open a local office to work closely with our member universities.

University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus joins  SAF

In March 2014, SAF signed a MoU with the University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus (UNMC). Both organizations agreed to cooperate on educational exchanges, and SAF looks forward to facilitating UNMC students taking part in our programs.

UNMC is the first university to join the SAF International University Network in Malaysia and will be served through our SAF SE Asia Office in Taiwan. UNMC provides students with a unique opportunity to earn a UK degree while studying in Malaysia and was the first ever branch campus of a British University established outside of the UK.

UNMC is a full and integral part of the University of Nottingham, UK. All teaching, assessments and examinations are carried out in English. The university welcomed its first group of students in 2000, and now accommodates 5,000 students from over 70 countries.

SAF Connects with Universities in Malaysia

SAF held three seminars for Malaysian students in February 2014, which marked the first time that SAF staff has spoken to Malaysian students about study abroad and internship options via the Foundation. The Universiti Putra Malaysia assisted in organizing two distinct sessions on their campus, while the University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus arranged for one seminar. All sessions were very well attended, and SAF is looking forward to further work in Malaysia and to welcoming its first Malaysian students to SAF programs.

First Students from SE Asia Join SAF Programs

Earlier this year Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) joined SAF, the first Southeast Asian university to do so. UBD leads a group of three small, very focused, well funded and very selective universities in Brunei, a small sultanate on the island of Borneo. The first UBD students joined SAF program options in Australia, the UK and USA in fall 2013. In neighboring Malaysia SAF has identified a small group of universities - some from the country's strong emerging private higher education sector - which is expected to join the SAF International University Network in 2014. In Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau interest is focused on SAF's International Career Development Programs (internships), but it is expected that university and student interest will broaden. Work with universities in SE Asia is being done from SAF's Country Office in nearby Taiwan. It is expected that in early 2014 SAF will have a staff member permanently based in the region and soon thereafter will open a small office in Brunei.

UBD’s Discovery Year Connects with SAF

In a MoU signing ceremony on November 7, 2012, the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) joined the SAF International University Network. Founded in 1985, UBD is the oldest, flagship university of the small Sultanate of Brunei. The university (current enrollment approximately 4,000) recently established Discovery Year to facilitate personal, academic and professional growth opportunities for their students through community-based, international education and internship programs abroad.

Discovery Year began in 2011, and in 2012 55% of UBD undergraduates joined the program. UBD anticipates 80% participation in 2013, and SAF is honored that our International University Network will contribute to meeting the demand for expansion and quality programming.

It is SAF's great pleasure to begin our cooperation with UBD and its Discovery Year.

Meiji University Joins the SAF International University Network

SAF is pleased to announce that Meiji University has joined the Foundation as the 14th member of the SAF International University Network in Japan.

Meiji University was founded in 1881 as the Meiji Law School by a group of young, thirtyish lawyers: Tatsuo Kishimoto, Kozo Miyagi, and Misao Yashiro. Meiji University today is one of the country’s most prominent private universities with nine faculties: Law, Commerce, Political Science and Economics, Arts and Letters, Science and Technology, Agriculture, Business Administration, Information and Communication and Global Japanese Studies. In 2013, Meiji will launch the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Science as its 10th School.

Meiji is a leader in the pursuit to globalize Japanese higher education. The university was selected for the Global 30 Project by the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The Global 30 Project provides funding to participant universities to internationalize aspects of their curriculum to increase international student enrollments and to support the development of joint international research projects. In addition, in 2012 Meiji’s School of Political Science and Economics was selected to participate in MEXT’s Promotion of Global Human Resource Development, commonly called Global 30 Plus. Recipients of Global 30 Plus funding are expected to increase outbound student mobility, and Meiji University will receive approximately JPY 600 million in grants for this project over the next five years.

SAF to Sponsor Global Internship Conference

SAF is pleased to invite our member universities to Singapore for the 2013 Global Internship Conference (GIC): June 11-13, 2013.

Host Partner: Singapore National University

The GIC seeks to bring together all parties involved in the growing field of academic work placement, academic internships and experiential education. In June 2012 at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), conference participants debated wide-ranging issues such as best practices, diversity, paid vs. unpaid placements, and government policies. It was a lively and stimulating event.

The next GIC will take place in Singapore at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, located on the banks of the Singapore River. The conference will revisit some of these most pressing and longstanding topics of the internship field, as well as exploring a variety of new issues that attendees bring to the ever-changing agenda. The conference theme; North, South, East and West: Internships at a Crossroad; will ensure a focus on how universities and partners in Asia are bringing fresh and exciting new ideas to the world of internships. Universities and partners in North America and Europe will bring more established practices for consideration and comparison.

SAF is pleased to sponsor the GIC with the Academic Internship Council (AIC), UC Berkeley, National University of Singapore, and Michigan State University.
